Case Study: Accent Sail

The first question in any sail design is simple, where do we want shade? Shade Industries specializes in providing shade, rather than just a cover for a specific size area. We take into consideration many factors, including time of day and time of year the shade is most important. After that there can be many details that go into the final design.

This backyard layout presented the following challenges:
• The west end of the pool deck needed shade
• The view of the peak from the kitchen needed to be preserved
• The palm tree needed to remain unaffected
• The pool plumbing and landscape lighting had to be considered in post placement
• A new irrigation system had been installed so minimal impact on the lawn was important
• The backyard is used for entertaining so the sails needed to open up towards the house

Solution:
The final design used 2 sails. The small sail in a contrasting color was used as an accent pointing the way towards the shaded deck. A large curve made sure the palm tree did not require special pruning and posts were placed for minimum impact on landscaping. The thin profile of the sails kept the view of the peak unobstructed.

We’d like to extend special thanks to Mr. and Mrs. T. for letting us climb on their roof to get these photos.
